Niall Summerton Discusses his ‘Truth Inside’ single

Niall Summerton released Truth Inside, a laidback lo-fi jangle-pop single. Truth Inside opens with light acoustic guitar strumming, with his whispery vocals slipping in, “You could be near me.” A jangly electric guitar gives the song character that really defines the sound.

Truth Inside is, “a bit of an observational love song that I wrote in a new room that I spent a lot of lockdown in,” Niall shared with Puddlegum. “It’s about succumbing to how you feel and accepting emotion!”

The vocals in Truth Inside are carved out to give it a mid-range sound, cutting frequencies below 400Hz and above 4kHz. He also has a tight compression on his vocal layers, and a slap back to give it depth. There are very subtle harmonies that comes in during the chorus, sitting behind the music. A light synth also comes in during the chorus, with a more prominent organ tone that transitions into a bridge. Niall played the drums lightly in the background, centered in the mix. He strummed a classical guitar is lightly on the left and right, bringing body to the song.

Niall gave us the story behind the classical guitar, “I recorded the classical with a guitar that spent my whole childhood in the attic above where I slept which is kind of cool!”

Bass noodles a backdrop to the song that at times takes the lead instrument. “The bass is played by Mason McClurg, a guy I’ve never actually met because he lives in Oregon. We formed an online friendship over mutual music tastes and listening to each others tunes.” The two collaborated from a distance, as Niall Summerton hails from Harrogate, England.

This is a perfect late-night song to soak in with the windows open and the lights dimmed. Add it to your playlist because it mixes in nicely.
