A band from Japan to tune into is BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON. They recently released their fifth single, Try, and this song has all the hooks. Indie dream pop to the core, their latest single has brought me back to listen over and over.

BROTHER SUN SISTER MOON hails from Osaka, Japan, and began releasing music in 2020 (forming in 2017). They released a four-track EP, Some Same Soul, in November. The band then released a new single, Birthday, near the end of December, drawing heavily from Beach House… dreamy guitar melodies, drawn out vocals in bright reverb, downtempo beats.

The three-piece band is lead by Shohei Megumi on vocals and guitar. Bassist Ayu Megumi also lends her voice. Yusuke Okada is on drums, playing exactly what the songs need.

Try takes a more pop sound, instead of an atmospheric sound. They allow for space between elements, filling the sound out in the last 45 seconds with synths. The interaction between the bass and drums makes the song a bop. The guitars provide the hooks that have remained in my head for days, and the vocals are delivered perfectly.

Birthday has such a dreamy landscape. Layers of guitar melodies set a somnolent tone at the beginning of the song. The beat is a simple high hat beat surrounded by droning guitar picking. Guitar melodies with differing depths of reverb weave in and out of the song.

Sleep in my eyes
Sleep in my eyes, wait for the gift
Give me your light
Give me your darkness I’ve felt
Oh Lord, your baby has a birthday!

I’m really excited to hear what they do next. The latest two singles (Try and Birthday) have been really memorable. (Try is on the Puddlegum Mixtape: Tape Thirteen.)
